On a show I watched, “You’re the Worst,” there was a scene where one of the main characters, whose name is Gretchen, reconnects with an old friend and says, “Don’t you miss when the smell of cinnamon made you happy?” And when she asks this, the old friend says that cinnamon still makes her happy, and it makes Gretchen really think about her life, and it’s a sad moment. She’s an incredibly cynical character, but you can see the light bulb clicking on right there. Cinnamon will always make me happy. It’s like a warm hug. Of course, though, like most things that make you happy, it can kill you. Remember the cinnamon challenge? Yeah, apparently it didn’t go so well for a lot of people… but aside from the possibility of aspiration, more than half a tsp of cinnamon a day can cause serious health issues; it can totally trash your liver. Another thing to be concerned about…
We’re much more afraid for our health now… Our modern lives, with all of our toxins and other health hazards, and the knowledge of it all making us scared. Just the fact of knowing what’s hazardous to your health can actually become hazardous to your health if you think about it too much, and anxiety and paranoia take over your life. Remember 1000 Ways to Die? A long time ago most people only knew one way to die… but they couldn’t really share the information once they found out.
Ignorance is bliss. A part of life in this day and age is actually deciding which hazard you’re okay with killing you. Whether it’s smoking, drinking, eating…or being within 6 ft of people. It’s about what makes you happy, though, and what’s worth it for you. Once upon a time a person would have no idea of these kinds of possibilities. You just took your mercury pills, drank your radium, and ran off to raw-dog a syphilis-ridden vagina with a smile on your face. Although just the action of smiling has been proven to release dopamine and makes you happy… So, smile like a dumbass, I guess.
